There once was a Zen master named Ryōkan living a simple, solitary life in a small, mountainside hut. One evening, a thief climbed to the hut, only to discover there was nothing worth stealing.
Returning from a walk, Ryōkan surprised the thief just as he was preparing to leave.
“You’ve come a long way to visit me,” Ryōkan said. “You shouldn’t leave empty-handed. Here, take my clothes.”
Stunned, the thief took the clothes and fled. Ryōkan sat naked, watching the moon through his window.
“Poor fellow,” he mused. “I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon.
