Welcome to our School

Black Mountain Spirit School of Chinese Kung Fu is dedicated to both the philosophy and practice of ancient martial traditions. Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the school teaches three core styles: Ho’o Chin Pai Northern Shaolin, Ming Hsien Kuei Shou BaGuaZhang Eight Trigram Palm, and Yang Jia TaiJiQuan Grand Ultimate Fist.

Training emphasizes real applications as well as the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. Through Kung Fu, students gain confidence, learn to manage challenges, and develop the ability to face conflict directly. Furthermore, instruction fosters personal growth, discipline, and resilience.

The school is united by a single goal: preserving and practicing authentic Chinese Kung Fu. Guided by Da Shi Fu Marc Black, a teacher with decades of experience, students benefit from his knowledge and integrity. Afterward, once visitors explore the styles and identify their goals, they may select a membership that fits their journey. Training here is more than exercise — it’s a journey into authentic Kung Fu in Pittsburgh.

The True Nature of Self-Defense

Self-defense is more than throwing a punch or blocking an attack. It requires a comprehensive understanding of both physical and psychological dynamics. This knowledge often makes the difference between safety and vulnerability in dangerous situations.

At Black Mountain Spirit, training includes both technique and mental conditioning. Students prepare to handle high-stress encounters where adrenaline, fear, and unpredictability dominate. Moreover, instruction develops awareness, resilience, and calm decision-making under pressure. Consequently, the mind becomes as strong as the body. For anyone seeking practical self-defense in Pittsburgh, Kung Fu provides both protection and personal growth.

The Physical and Psychological Elements of Self-Defense

On a physical level, self-defense training at Black Mountain Spirit teaches students to use the body efficiently. Balance, timing, and power are applied to respond quickly and effectively. However, what works in practice often shifts under real-life conditions. Confrontations are rarely straightforward; they are chaotic, fast-moving, and usually occur in less-than-ideal settings.

Psychologically, training develops instinctive awareness and resilience. Students learn to remain calm, assess threats, and act effectively without overthinking. Furthermore, instruction emphasizes how confidence, posture, and composure can deter potential threats. Indeed, in many cases, tension is diffused before physical engagement becomes necessary. True martial arts prepare the body and the mind, so students walk with balance, resilience, and quiet strength.

Experience in an Instructor Matters

Experience is essential for any self-defense instructor because it bridges textbook techniques with real-world application. Teaching in a controlled setting differs greatly from handling the split-second decisions of an actual confrontation.

Marc Black brings nearly 40 years of martial arts practice and 19 years of experience working in Pittsburgh’s toughest environments. Consequently, he has seen firsthand what works, what fails, and what it takes to apply techniques effectively under pressure.

Seasoned instructors like Marc provide insights gained only through years of real-world encounters. They prepare students for challenges beyond the dojo by teaching not only physical moves but also the mindset and readiness that make self-defense work.

For anyone serious about self-defense, learning from an instructor with this depth of experience makes all the difference in building skills that last a lifetime. Guidance from a seasoned instructor transforms training into confidence that carries into every part of life.

Black Mountain Spirit - About the Instructor

I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT AND CONFUSING FINDING A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL CAN BE.

My Martial Arts Journey
Not in the best of shape, no where near athletic

I began my martial arts journey at 17 years old, standing 5’9″ and weighing only 135 pounds. At that time, I suffered from severe anemia. Even slight overheating brought nosebleeds and black-out spells.

As a young altar boy, I experienced both often, even while serving mass. I never took a gym class. Instead, I handed in my medical excuse, sat down, and read quietly.

Through reading, my mind opened to new ideas. I studied my own religion, then others, and eventually explored philosophy and spiritual doctrines. That exploration exposed me to the deep wisdom found in Traditional Chinese Martial Arts (TCMA).

This foundation in philosophy and spirituality became the gateway to the physical practice of Kung Fu training. That was the beginning of a lifelong path that still inspires my teaching at Black Mountain Spirit today. That first step led me to a lifetime of practice — and it can do the same for you.

An Alternative to regular exercise

Many adults experience boredom with routine fitness classes or reach a plateau in physical performance. At Black Mountain Spirit in Pittsburgh, adult programs provide a powerful alternative to a typical gym workout. Training develops both body and mind while teaching real-life self-defense strategies in a fun, focused environment.

ShiFu Marc Black understands the frustration of repetitive push-ups, sit-ups, and standard exercise classes. Even for the dedicated, progress often feels limited. By contrast, Traditional Chinese Martial Arts (TCMA) offers a wide range of techniques and movements. Students continually discover new levels to conquer and fresh challenges to reach.

Instruction at Black Mountain Spirit remains engaging and thought-provoking. Concepts and methods are taught alongside workouts, creating both intrigue and growth. Students often find themselves in excellent shape without realizing how much harder they have worked, because training feels like solving a puzzle — and having fun. For adults in Pittsburgh seeking more than a gym routine, Kung Fu offers a path of growth, challenge, and discovery.

The Meaning of Kung Fu
It's not about fighting, it's about making yourself a better human being

Most people do not realize that Korean and Japanese martial arts forms translate directly as “fighting style” or “way.” For example, Kara-Te means “empty hand,” Bu-Do means “martial way,” and Tae Kwon Do means “foot, fist, way.” By contrast, in direct translation, Kung Fu means “skill that requires great time and effort” combined with “human being.”

This lesson has profoundly influenced ShiFu Marc Black and continues to guide every aspect of his teaching. The connection between deep philosophy, spirituality, and equally deep physical expression has shaped his path.

Moreover, the practice of Kung Fu has created a lasting fraternity among students who share in this tradition. Its value extends far beyond words, offering limitless benefits to the community, to those who live in it, and to everyone touched by its practice. Kung Fu training in Pittsburgh connects tradition, community, and personal strength in ways no gym class can.
