YOU HAVE REQUESTED MEMBERSHIP IN A TRADITIONAL ACADEMY OF CHINESE KUNG FU
The Kung Fu class is filled with many Chinese cultural practices and observances. Even though we are a modern school, we still follow the traditional rules and etiquette given to us by our Kung Fu ancestors. The rules of Etiquette help build character and offer structure to the beginning student, while providing depth and meaning for the more advanced student. Adherence to the instruction of our teachers, a persevering spirit to train regularly, and a positive attitude are the keys necessary for a student to learn Kung Fu in a way that ensures safety, is extremely effective, health enhancing, and meaningful.
DaShiFu Black wants to be able to offer all of the joys & benefits that he’s received as part of his experience with Chinese Kung Fu, & the biggest part of that will be his own enforcement of those things that are most traditional, as well as the additional perspectives & experiences that modern living have provided to him.
The Kung Fu systems taught in this school are traditional in the spirit of their teaching, as well as in their content. Martial artists pursue their particular systems as a Lifestyle, as a pursuit that develops good physical health, inner discipline, a humble nature, strength of spirit and courage, a natural morality, wisdom and inner peace … all in addition to, and equally as important as, the capacity for self defense.
Every student receives personal instruction from Master Black in each class. You are expected to pay 100% attention at all times. Even though good friends are made here, we do not come to socialize. It’s more the cameraderie of the Martial Artist, the underlying spirit that binds us in a common pursuit.
It All Begins With Respect
All members must show respect at all times for Black Mountain Spirit as an academy of learning, Shi Fu as the head of the academy, advanced students as those who have come before, & class associates as fellow travelers on the path.
Upon acceptance into the BMS school of Chinese Kung Fu, members sincerely pledge to obey all rules & regulations set up for the purpose of keeping order.
Kung Fu has rules and gestures that are very important. We place much emphasis on the development of polite gestures that are deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. Gestures are behaviors that serve as reminders of our responsibilities to ourselves and to others. These gestures connect us with the ancient traditions of Kung Fu. The most common gesture is The Salutation.
Based upon ancient tradition, there is a strict code of conduct adhered to in the School. Rules develop and internalize discipline. They are very necessary for safety. They create an atmosphere in which training can take place. They create calm. They permit students to grow in positive, respectful and meaningful ways. They are not arbitrary. They provide an environment for training of students from five and up to take place.
To a Martial Artist, the School is a sacred place and is treated with reverence. It is where students come to challenge themselves, confront their weaknesses, vulnerabilities and develop responsibility, kindness, competency and humility. ShiFu requests that adult students and parents of younger students become familiar with the Student Handbook and encourage their children to understand and respect the information provided.
This is a Professional Academy of Learning
This agreement binds students to adhere to the rules of the school. The rules set before you are all based on common sense, respect for yourself & your fellow students, & the furthering of the school you train in. Very bluntly, please do not do Anything that breaks the rules of honesty, decency or respect. Use Common Sense and a sense of Compassion in all decisions that you make regarding The Black Mountain Spirit School of Chinese Kung Fu. You can be Assured that the exact same consideration is being made for you, as it has for everyone else who has been training here with us. Anything that breaks the rules of logic, common sense, decency or respect will be considered exactly as such – as conduct that is indecent and disrespectful. These types of behavior are unacceptable for members of the Black Mountain Spirit Community and disciplinary action will be taken. At all times respect must be paid towards the rules of the school as are found both online & in the Student Handbook, and disregard for these are subject to warnings being issued. Three warnings having been issued, or blatant abuse of school property or students all qualify for Automatic and Immediate prohibition from further participation in further school activities. At a later date ShiFu will determine if and when a student will be permitted to again participate in Black Mountain Spirit school activities.
KUNG FU: Definition
Kung Fu roughly translates as Hard Work, or Human Skill that requires Great Time & Effort. So training at the Black mountain Spirit Guan is not an easy thing. Patience, strong will, and personal motivation are the beginning steps a student must take when they begin. The rest, including all of the health benefits, the self defense skills, the mental and spiritual development are all steps that your ShiFu will take with you to ensure your personal success and happiness in these arts.
Be Prepared To Work. If you are not putting forth your best efforts, you cannot be evaluated by & promoted on your best efforts. All of the efforts of the teaching staff here at Black Mountain Spirit Are geared towards helping you strive along the path of personal development whether it’s physical, mental, or spiritually.
Students in this school require three characteristics:
Desire. The student must want not only to achieve the physical rewards of martial training, but to accept the responsibilities that accompany such knowledge. A student’s desire must be supported by patience. It’s the Journey, not the Destination, that makes the goal worth arriving at.
Dedication. Success in martial arts training relies more on the regularity of practice and the passage of time than any other factor. The student must be dedicated to attending classes, as well as maintaining a personal practice schedule, time permitting. Outside practice is necessary to achieve true progress. A form learned, a test passed, is a beginning, not an end, and should be thought of only as a license to practice. It is said that a form is not “yours” until you have practiced it one thousand times.
Discipline. Martial Artists are healthier, stronger, faster and more in control because of a disciplined lifestyle. Setting goals and carrying them out, beginning to end, pushing limits and developing new abilities are part of a martial artists plan for success. Discipline yourself to maintain your training schedule, whatever it may be, even if you are tired, because training is cumulative. In the real world, neither your opponents, nor any other form of stress will relent simply because you are tired. Only half of what martial artists achieve is physical, the other half is, of course, mental. Discipline fosters both physical and mental endurance … crucial qualities for the martial artist.
Proper effort and spirit should always be shown in the school. Maintain and develop a positive, well-disciplined attitude. Practice and exercise at home will give better results.
IN ORDER TO ADVANCE IN RANK ,YOU MUST BE QUALIFIED
What that means in terms of the curriculum here at Black Mountain Spirit is: You must be enrolled in both the Forms Class, and the Drills/Applications classes of your style(s). Only in this way may you have your strength, speed, & reactions trained enough physically, made intellectually firm in your knowledge of technique, & Experienced enough to grow & develop as time goes by. No true teacher could, in good conscience, promote anyone who isn’t putting forth the time & effort to develop the aforementioned skills in a demonstrable manner, garnered the details of technique, and the experience within the curriculum to do so. The investment that each promotion makes in your future is what culminates ultimately in your health, knowledge of history, martial methods and principles, personal development as a human being, and in Black Sash Certification. For anyone seeking to advance through the curriculum at Black Mountain Spirit, this truth is irrefutable and will be enforced without question or exception.
YOU MUST HAVE A SENSE OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY CONCERNING YOUR SCHOOL
You come to my school after researching amongst the other schools out there, hearing from other instructors & practitioners of my reputation, finally getting the chance to talk at length with me, & then after signing on for classes at our school. Later, as you progress through the curriculum, others join the school, and as a Big Brother or Sister they look to you for examples of proper conduct. They may even have been brought in by you, & the example you had set. You’re so much more healthy than other people around them, even people who play sports or are ‘athletes’ at schools they’ve attended. They admire your enthusiasm, they can feel the passion that moves you to practice difficult things through difficulty in in further still difficult situations. There is no denying your Indomitable Spirit. The sense of personal fulfillment, the effort you put forth to keep the guan clean, to share this interest with like-minded people. You actively participate in demonstrations and tournaments. You, in the eyes of all who see you, Epitomize everything they’ve ever seen, learned, or heard about what it means to be a practitioner of Chinese Kung Fu. These people in turn bring their own passions & desires, and their particular skill-sets act as further testing criteria to help you develop your own quality of character. The above is a description of conduct for one who has a sense of Personal Responsibility concerning their school. This Is the Black Mountain Spirit.
AGREEMENTS
For Committed Students, the Black Mountain Spirit School uses written agreements in order to have in writing the responsibilities of the student to the school, and the responsibilities of the school to the student. All schedule changes that need to be made by either party must be submitted in writing 60 days prior to the scheduled change. If the school is making a change that directly affects the nature of an agreement with a student, then the Black Mountain Spirit School is obligated to make every possible effort to facilitate and provide for all of the parameters of the agreement to the student. If a student wishes to change that enrollment status it must be with the intent of making it a permanent change, that is, the student would be making it a change to last the duration of their agreement with BMS.
TUITION PAYMENTS
All class fees must be paid in full and on time. Although it is understandable that there are extreme circumstances that may arise, but; if a student is habitually late they will not be permitted to participate.
On-Line Bill Pay is the preferred method of receiving payment. All fees are subject to an annual increase due to the cost of living. The only exception to this are agreements that exceed said annual period.
Tuition and testing fees (if eligible) are due and must be paid on or before the fifth of each month, regardless of Student’s absence, major holidays, and/or school holidays.
Registration fees, tuition, equipment, camps, birthday parties, testing fees and private lessons are non-refundable
Please understand that making tuition payments on time is your responsibility. Reminders are not automatically sent out. Although you may receive a courtesy bill reminder via email, text, or messenger, tuition not received by the fifth of each month will assess a late charge, starting at $25.00. Each week that passes without payment will result in an additional $25.00 fee being added to the account balance.
Delinquent accounts exceeding 3 weeks will be turned over to a collection agency.
There are no refunds.
PERSONAL CONDUCT
Leave all negativity at the door.
This is hard work. Really hard work if you take it seriously. The last thing that anyone needs after taking the time to fit these classes into their already busy schedule is a bad attitude from someone that they’ve dedicated themselves to working with and ‘for’ in that they’re trying to help their fellow Kung Fu brothers and sisters advance as much as themselves. Nothing says “I Don’t Want to Be Here” more than a petulant attitude at someone else who’s equally stressed, or a lack of respect for the efforts being shown and put forth, by people who have made the decision on your journey of personal development.
If Necessary: take a few extra minutes in the car or on the bus to calm down, arrive early and sit with a coffee or smoothie at a local business to decompress. Snapping out is unacceptable.
Class Attendance/Tardiness/Absence
The doors open 5 min’s prior to when class is scheduled to begin -please don’t arrive early. Arrive at your lesson promptly, dressed and warmed up, ready to go. Not being prepared to work is an attitude lacking respect for your fellow classmates’ time & efforts.
The Guan is not a place to sit and socialize. Time is given at the beginning of class to catch up, and at the end of class for well-wishing. While we are all friends and family here, we all came here with the same intention: to improve ourselves and our quality of life through this martial discipline. Be Prepared To Work. If you are not putting forth your best efforts, you cannot be evaluated by & promoted on your best efforts.
There is a scheduled start and finish time for each class. Arriving late to class on a regular basis (being late 50% of the time illustrates) is something that should be avoided. Tardiness or being late to class is probably one of the biggest bad habits there is. It is not good etiquette to arrive late for class. This shows lack of respect for the style, the instructor and your fellow students. If you need to leave early, please inform the Instructor at the start of class. Barring any difficulties you will have already made your instructor aware of such as transportation issues or schedule conflicts. Being late:
1 Is disrespectful to the teacher. It makes it seem that you do not care about what he or she is teaching.
2 Disrupts the class as you enter late. Students have to move and change rank arrangements.
3 Causes you to miss part of the warm up and exercise program. Some students are late on purpose to miss/cut down on their workload & it cannot be tolerated.
4 It shows a lack of commitment to your practice, to your fellow classmates, and to your instructor. If you miss 50% of your classes on a regular basis it will most certainly impact on your ability to test for promotion In a timely fashion.
When your instructor signifies that it is your lesson time, quickly gather up your classmates and meet together on the floor. Lessons are not the time for idle chatter. Make your questions pertinent and give the lesson your full attention. Do not interrupt others during lesson time. . .
Arriving Late
If you cannot make your scheduled time and are going to be late, please inform your instructor. ShiFu would like to know if you, or your child is ill, injured or will not be in class.
If you are going to be Absent, if you are going to be Late, if you are going to be anything but Early or On Time, then please call or text the instructor. Talk to instructors when you will be missing any length of time. It affects your ability to progress through the ranks.
Absence should be reported to your teacher no later than 24hrs before the scheduled task. This will allow your instructor to plan his or her lesson schedule for that day ahead of time. ShiFu prepares thoughtfully for each class and absences make a difference in planning for the children who will be attending.
If you’re going to be late, you Must txt msg the instructor. If it’s a nice day and everyone stays home, but you’re only going to be arriving late, if you do not inform your instructor, you may be met with a locked door when u arrive.
If you have an injury that will not allow you to practice with your usual rigor, inform your instructor. The instructor is very capable of adapting your lessons to your needs.
Private Lessons
The assumption is always that everyone is always going to be coming to class. With this in mind, everyone is expected to arrive prior to the start time. If you have not arrived by the start time and have not texted/called to confirm that you Are on your way, The staff can no longer assume that you are on your way and the facility will close for the duration of that class. Time is too valuable to waste.
IN CLASS CONDUCT

Anyone seeking membership agrees to comply with the rules and regulations posted by the The Black Mountain Spirit School of Chinese Kung Fu, relating to the use of the facility; including safety, acceptable clothing and footwear, hygiene and conduct. Striking pads and targets must be returned to their proper place. We all help to keep our Guan clean and orderly. You are asked to exercise ordinary care while using the facilities for the protection of yourself and the other students.
All students must be in uniform in order to participate in class. Arrive at your lesson promptly, get dressed or arrive dressed and ready to warm up and get ready to go. All students must be in uniform in order to participate in class.

Uniforms may be purchased through the BMS office. Although it is understandable that there are extreme circumstances that may arise, if a student is habitually out of uniform they will not be permitted to participate.
Not being prepared to work is an attitude lacking respect for your fellow classmates’ time & efforts.
Shoes and boots which have been used outdoors and visibly show dirt, debris, oil, or other contaminants are prohibited on the training floor. In situations such as winter snows, please do your best to ‘kick them off’ before entering, and wipe your feet on the mat upon Thoroughly. Wet shoes will not be permitted on the training floor.
Class uniforms break down into 2 categories, our Basic Uniform (School long or short sleeved shirt w/black, grey or red athletic pants of your choice) which is mandatory, or Formal (Classical Chinese clothing). Uniforms may be purchased through the BMS office. Although it is understandable that there are extreme circumstances that may arise, but; if a student is habitually out of uniform they will not be permitted to participate.
Sparring equipment is also mandatory for participation, and may be purchased either from the school or another source.
Salutations
Members must salute to show respect for the school, when entering or leaving the training area.
The right hand forms a fist, which represents power, as the left hand remains open and covers the fist, which represents control over power. These hand gestures are combined to form a salutation, which represents respect (similar to a military salute or respectful handshake). The salutation should not be mistaken for kowtowing nor any other religious ritual. These hand gestures also represent several other facets of training and life, which will be explained throughout the course of ones training.
– When entering a training area or prior to stepping on to the mat, a student will salute.
– When being greeted by fellow students and instructors, or being addressed directly by another student or instructor, or after receiving instruction whether as an individual or as part of a group, students are encouraged to salute.
– When about to engage in a partnered activity with another student, such as speed of hand drills, or applications students are encouraged to salute.
– When leaving the practice area, a student will salute.
These salutations are not necessary outside of the school, except when involved in a school activity such as tournaments, seminars or demonstrations, but when received should be returned as a common courtesy.
Pay Attention
Do not speak aloud when an instructor is addressing the class.
Pay absolute attention when an instructor is addressing you as an individual or as part of a group.
If you have a question, or you are discussing a technique being displayed/practiced, then there won’t be a problem when you are asked to share it with the class so that everyone may benefit from the information being shared. Often times, unnecessary conversation is just another excuse not to practice. If you are tired, slow down in your efforts but keep doing the forms, don’t exert as much energy as you continue your reps, but somehow keep moving. When you sit down, you will cool down, and it is difficult to get back up from there.
Breaks
Students may excuse themselves from class at anytime for water, bathroom, etc. by presenting a salute towards the training area or instructor before exiting. Another salute should be presented upon return to class. Students do not have to be acknowledged by the instructor before leaving in urgent situations. Students should be mindful and respectful in regards to the timing of their exit.
Professional Activities
Your school involves itself with martial-arts related activities throughout the year. As your rank & or experience increases, participation in these activities is not mandatory, but is hoped for and appreciated.
Personal Effects
Neatly place all non-training items, such as clothing and gym bags outside the training area where they do not cause clutter. Cubby holes are provided for these items as well as training shoes should you wish to keep a pair ‘permanently’ on the school premises.
Please place all personal items either in cubby holes or lockers when available, or on a coat hanger. Do not leave them laying around the school. Neatly place all non-training items, such as clothing and gym bags outside the training area where they do not cause clutter. When lockers are provided, it is up to you to provide a temporary lock. The Black Mountain School of Chinese Kung Fu or the facility is not liable for any stolen or lost property of the Client or guest.

We all help to keep our Guan clean and orderly. Everything has its place, so when you use something laying out in the open, make sure that you return it to its place. Each weapon must be returned to its appropriate rack. Please help make sure that striking pads and targets are returned to their proper place.
Although ShiFu accepts personal responsibility for the care and upkeep of the Studio, there have been times when students have wanted to help out. For that reason, a list of simple maintenance activities is available for anyone who is interested in offering a hand from time to time.
Cell phones. Use common sense. Take conversations outside the Guan (training area). All cell phones and other personal electronic devices must be turned off/on vibrate when in the school, unless otherwise specified by an instructor. Phones on the wall are Acceptable for emergency purposes only. Repeated breaks to check messages are not.
VISITORS/VIEWING AREA
Siblings must be monitored and quiet at all times or will be asked to leave.
Parents and family members are welcome to watch classes, but must be quiet and not disturb students or staff. Coaching and/or any and all other commentary should not reach the ears of people on the floor. If you cannot exercise the same self-control as the people participating in class you will be asked to leave.
Miscellaneous
At all times respect must be paid towards the rules of the school as are found both online & in the Student Handbook, and disregard for these are subject to warnings being issued. Three warnings having been issued, or blatant abuse of school property or students all qualify for Automatic and Immediate prohibition from further participation in further school activities.
Students may not switch classes without prior approval and scheduling with the school’s office. If a student needs to change their class time due to other sport obligations, or for any other reason, scheduling must be approved and confirmed by the school’s office. Fees will not be refunded. When approved by the school’s office the student’s schedule will be amended to resume when said prior obligations allow.
Students may not make up missed classes unless due to personal injury or serious medical illness without prior approval and scheduling with the school’s office. Student or responsible party must bring in a doctor’s note stating the reason for the absence and indicating as to when the student may return to class.
SPARRING
In our school, the purpose of sparring is to train students in the theory and techniques of their chosen self-defense system. Our sparring is a controlled form of contact sparring. The principle goal is to train the defense reflexes (evasion), while offering the opportunity to practice offensive techniques learned in class. Because forceful contact is promoted, protective equipment or padding is required. Sparring participants are always responsible for each others safety. All strikes and kicks should be “pulled” as if expecting each other’s evasive maneuvers to fail. New students should never “go all out” until they become experienced in our sparring methods.Careless injury of another student can lead to expulsion.
At the start of the bout two bows/salutations should be given. The first is given towards the referee and the finally to the opposing competitor. The bow is then repeated at the end of the first round and at the beginning of the second round.
When sparring or engaged in paired contact drills, protective gear must be worn. Your instructor will determine whether full or partial protective equipment is necessary dependent upon the practice of the day.
SOME LESSONS ARE EASY, SOME ARE HARD
Some lessons may seems harder than others. This is usually because that particular technique has some subtle movement that you will only achieve after you have practiced it for a while. Be eager to repeat it over and over and over. Trust your instructor & their experience, don’t keep asking for more techniques before having at least a good grasp of the material you’re already responsible. After all, what good is a new technique, when the old ones still aren’t under your control yet?
You may participate in the group exercises of other classes with the leading instructor’s permission, if they practice something that you are unfamiliar with, do your best to follow along, and ask for clarification later. Each style has its own intrinsic value, so these variations can be very useful to add some contrast to your repertoire of skills. Their strength may be your weakness. What once were your weaknesses Will Become your strengths.
THERE IS ONLY ONE TEACHER IN THE ROOM
Since many of the techniques have multiple interpretations, different people may have an alternative emphasis, or understanding, than you. For this reason, do not attempt to teach something to some one else unless you are asked to. You may not have the complete technique quite yet, and it would be a shame to teach someone else your own bad habits.
Members must not give instruction in or out of the Tao Chang (martial training school) or Guan (temple) without permission of the instructor. Any member found in violation of this rule is subject to dismissal from the organization.
VIOLENCE &/OR DISCRIMINATION
The Black Mountain Spirit guan is committed to providing an environment free from unlawful discrimination and unlawful harassment. This means comments or conduct that is known, or ought to be known, to be unwelcome as it is degrading to another human being will not be tolerated.
The Black Mountain Spirit guan is committed to providing an environment free from unlawful discrimination and unlawful harassment. This means comments or conduct that is known, or ought to be known, to be unwelcome as it is degrading to another human being. No person shall be made to feel unwelcome or less appreciated based upon race, colour, religion, national origin, sex, age, familial status or disability.
Within the 4 walls of our school, behavior which causes harm to others is unacceptable. No person shall be made to feel unwelcome or less appreciated based upon race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, familial status or disability under penalty of immediate expulsion.
Harassment, violence, and threats of violence, are prohibited in the school. (Of course, this does not refer to the practice of martial techniques in any manner, this refers to deliberate attempts to do physical harm to other members of the school).
Violation of this rule will result in immediate expulsion.
Although it is a fact that different people may hold different opinions about literally everything, and in this day & age there are no absolutes that may be applied to all situations, if our opinions differ, the only thing that we can all agree upon is that we don’t want to have someone else’s opinions or values imposed upon ourselves. No one will be permitted to impose opinions or values upon another member of our school. Outside of the aforementioned overt acts of violence and discrimination, we must all strive to be tolerant of one another. If someone isn’t breaking the rules they are welcome here at BMS. If someone is following the rules but won’t bend over backwards to accomodate your particular, personal, sensibilities, you’re going to have to decide for yourself if it’s so intolerable that you can no longer remain in the school. The #1 rule to remember when it comes to differences between each other is “IBmeUBU”. Let me Be me & I’ll let U B U.
If for any reason problems arise they are brought to the instructor, ShiFu Black. He is responsible for the mental, physical, and spiritual safety of everyone in the school, and problems should be mitigated by him, not amongst the students. At all times, be respectful of others.
STUDENT STANDING – GOOD AND BAD
At all times respect must be paid towards the rules of the school as are found both online in the Student Handbook, and disregard for these are subject to discretionary punitive action.
If a student is found to be involved in conduct disruptive of or damaging to the normal operations or property of the school or it’s students, they’ll be verbally reprimanded. If the student is a minor, then the parent or supervising guardian will be present when this reprimand is given. This is an opportunity to recognize that some form of conduct or behavior which was thought to be ‘ok’ is not.
If across a span of several classes a student continues to be involved in conduct disruptive of or damaging to the normal operations or property of the school or it’s students, they’ll be verbally reprimanded during this period and if said behavior remains unchanged will be given a written reprimand. The issuance of this reprimand will take place during an agreed-to meeting between the (if the student is a minor, then parent(s) or supervising guardian) the student, and the BMS Office. Because of it’s severity, this step of a written reprimand shall have only occurred following upon several attempts across the span of several classes to curtail said behavior.
This is a final opportunity to recognize that some form of conduct or behavior which was thought to be ‘ok’ is not.
If, further still, across a span of several classes a student continues to be involved in conduct disruptive of or damaging to the normal operations or property of the school or it’s students, after such a long history of both verbal and written warnings having been issued, the student will be subject to Automatic and Immediate prohibition from further participation in further school activities. If the need arises, at a later date the BMS Board will convene to determine if and when a student will be permitted to again participate in Black Mountain Spirit school activities.
All students agree to comply with the rules and regulations posted by the The Black Mountain Spirit School of Chinese Kung Fu, relating to the use of the facility; including safety, acceptable clothing and footwear, hygiene and conduct. All students agree to exercise ordinary care while using the facilities for the protection of themselves and others.
